KKR vs SRH Highlights IPL 2022: Kolkata Knight Riders beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 54 runs

It’s all over in Pune as Andre Russell concedes six runs in the final over to restrict SRH to 123/8 in 20 overs. They win the contest by 54 runs.

Tim Southee starts his final over with a wicket as he removes Shashank Singh on 11(12). The batter mistimes his shot, which flies high in the air before Shreyas Iyer collects it at the mid-off region. 

Southee could have struck again in the over but Shivam Mavi, the substitute fielder drops a sitter at short mid-wicket. 

Four runs come off the over as SRH reach 117/8 after 19 overs.

Another one bites the dust as Andre Russell picks his second wicket. Washington Sundar goes for the big shot but finds Venkatesh Iyer in the deep. He departs for 4(9). 

He then packs Marco Jansen, who is caught-behind on 1. Six runs and a couple of wickets come in the over as SRH reach 113/7 after 18 overs.

An economical over by Tim Southee as just six runs come off it. SRH: 107/5 (!7 overs)

Good over by Varun Chakravarthy as just one run come off it. SRH: 101/5 (16 overs)

Umesh Yadav gets the big wicket of Aiden Markram. He bowls a wide yorker and the batter drags the ball back on to his stump. He departs for 32 (25) as nine runs come off the over. SRH: 100/5 (15 overs)

Aiden Markram takes charge and smashes Varun Chakravarthy for a couple of sixes as 13 runs come off the over. SRH: 91-4 (14 overs)

Sunil Narine also picks a wicket in his final over as he caught and bowls Nicholas Pooran on 2. He concedes 34 runs in his four overs and picks a wicket. SRH: 78/4 (13 overs)

Big moment in the match as Varun Chakravarthy dismisses Abhishek Sharma. The batter mistimes his shot as it balloons up in the air, before Sam Billings collects it. He departs for 43(28).

Meanwhile, five runs come off the over as SRH reach 74/3 after 12 overs.

After two expensive overs, Sunil Narine recovers well and concedes just three runs in his third over. SRH: 69/2 (11 overs)

A short delivery by Andre Russell and Abhishek Sharma plays a well controlled pull, which races to the fence towards the long leg region. 

Nine runs come off the over as SRH race to 66/2 at the halfway stage.

Tim Southee grabs a stunner on his followthrough to bring an end to Rahul Tripathi’s stay in the middle. He departs for 9(12). 

Three runs and a wicket come off the over as SRH reach 57/2 after 9 overs.

Abhishek Sharma is on a roll. He whacks Sunil Narine for consecutive sixes as Rahul Tripathi enjoys the show from the best seat in the house. 17 runs come off the over as SRH reach 54/1 after 8 overs.

Varun Chakravarthy is introduced in the attack and he stats off with an economical over as just seven runs come off it. SRH: 31/1 (7 overs)

Andre Russell provides KKR with a much-needed breakthrough as he cleans up Kane Williamson for 9 (17). He tries to flick the bowler towards the fine-leg region but doesn’t connect, the ball goes and knock the top of the off stump. 

Meanwhile, a wicket and a single come off the over as SRH reach 31/1 after the powerplay.

A tight over by Umesh Yadav as just three runs come off it. SRH reach 30/0 after 5 overs.

Sunil Narine is introduced in the attack and he is welcomed with a cracking four by Abhishek Sharma. 10 runs come off his over as SRH reach 27/0 after 4 overs.

Another opportunity missed and this time it’s Kane Williamson. He hits a low full-toss by Umesh Yadav straight at him but the bowler fails to grab it on his followthrough. 

Meanwhile, he pulls the pacer for a boundary in the next delivery as six runs come in the third over. SRH: 17/0 (3 overs)

Abhishek Sharma welcomes Tim Southee with a four. The bowler bowls it length, but slightly wide off the off stick and the batter gets on top of it and punches it for a four towards the cover region. 

Meanwhile, there’s an opportunity but Sharma’s mistimed shot lands just in front of Russell. 

Southee bowls it wide, allowing Sharma to open his arms and the batter times it perfectly. The ball hits the middle of the blade and races for a four square of the wicket. 

10 runs come off the over as SRH reach 11/0 after 2 overs.

Umesh Yadav starts strong with two dots, before the third delivery, which is pitched on the length takes a thick outside edge and goes to the third-man region for a single as Abhishek Sharma opens his account. 

He bowls a superb ball against Williamson, who plays a defensive stroke. 

5 dots and a single as just one run come off it. SRH: 1/0 (1 over)

Abhishek Sharma and Kane Williamson walk out in the middle to start the 178-run chase. Umesh Yadav will lead the attack for KKR. 

Washington Sundar walks in to bowl the final over and he starts with a single. Sunil Narine then passes the strike back to Russell, who then smashes a juicy full-toss by the spinner for a six. 

The fourth ball is smashed straight to the fielder at long-off but the batters don’t take the single. 

Good decision by the batter as he hits Sundar for a second six and ends his over with another six. 20 runs come off the over as KKR post 177/6 in 20 overs. Andre Russell returns unbeaten on 49 off 28 balls.

A brilliant over by Bhuvneshwar Kumar as he doesn’t concede a single boundary and gets a wicket. Sam Billings departs for 34 off 29 balls as six runs and a wicket come off the over. KKR: 157/6 (19 overs)

Sam Billings and Andre Russell deal in singles before Natarajan misses his length and bowls in the slot, allowing Billings to open his arms and smash it straight over the bowler’s head for a six. 

9 runs come off the over as KKR edge past the 150-run mark. KKR: 151/5 (18 overs)

Andre Russell welcomes Bhuvneshwar Kumar with a boundary towards the mid-wicket region. The bowler recovers well and bowls a dot, followed by a single. 

Meanwhile, Bhuvneshwar deviates from his line and bowls a wide, before Billings cuts him for a double square of the wicket. He then punches the ball straight past the bowler for a single and Russell ends the over with a boundary. 

13 runs come off the over as KKR reach 142/5 after 17 overs. 

Umran Malik loses his line and length and is punished by Sam Billings. The wicketkeeper-batter hits him square of the wicket for a boundary and hits him for another one over his head. 10 runs come off the over. KKR: 129/5 (16 overs)

Natarajan keep things tight but Andre Russell smacks the bowler for a huge six in the final ball of the over. 10 runs come off the over as KKR reach 119/5 after 15 overs.

Slightly expensive by Umran Malik as he concedes nine runs in his over. KKR: 109/5 (14 overs)

With KKR running out of wickets, Andre Russell opts for an uncharacteristic approach. The powerful hitter faces five balls from Jansen and manages just one single. 

4 runs come off the over as KKR reach 100/5 after 13 overs.

T Natarajan joins the party as he traps Rinku Singh LBW with a deadly yorker. He departs for 5(6). Andre Russell joins the action and opens his account with a single. A wicket and seven runs come off the over as KKR reach 96/5 after 12 overs.

Another economical over by Washington Sundar as just 6 runs come off it. KKR: 89/4 (11 overs)

Umran Malik pitches the ball up against Shreyas Iyer and the KKR skipper opens the face of his bat and guides it straight past the bowler for a four. 

However, the contest is over soon as this time Iyer tries to flick a ball coming on his pads by Malik. However, in doing so he finds Rahul Tripathi at mid-wicket, who dives forwards to complete a sharp catch. His stay in the middle comes to end on 15 (8). KKR: 83-4 (10 overs)

Meanwhile, Washington Sundar bowls an economical over as just six runs come off it. KKR: 78/3 (9 overs)

Umran Malik strikes. The youngster bowls at a good face, forcing Nitish Rana to go deep in his crease as he tries to guide the ball on the on-side. Middles it, but the ball balloons up in the air before settling in Shashank Singh’s hands, who covers a good distance from the fine leg to complete the catch. He departs after scoring 26 (16). 

Shreyas Iyer then hits a boundary in the first ball he faces before the bowler strikes again. This time it’s the same fielder, who takes a brilliant catch in the deep to bring an end to Rahane’s stay in the middle. The opener departs for 28 (24). 

9 runs come off the over. KKR: 72-3 (8 overs)

Ajinkya Rahane is struggling, looks in some pain. Plays the ball over the 30-yard circle but hobbles for a single against Washington Sundar. 

Rana then passes the strike back to Rahane, who then hits the spinner for another maximum over the long-on fence. 

8 runs come off the over. KKR: 63/1 (7 overs)

Rahane breaks the shackles and smashes Jansen for a six over the long-on fence. He then takes a double, before passing the strike to Rana, who upper cuts the pacer for another six in the over. 

17 runs come off the final over in the powerplay as KKR reach 55/1 after 6 overs. 

Nitish Rana welcomes T Natarajan with a couple of cracking shots. The first one is smashed for a four, straight past the bowler and then hits him for a long six over the long-on fence. 

Natarajan then bowls a dot, before Rana launches him for another six, this time over the fine leg boundary. 

18 runs come off the over as KKR reach 38/1 after 5 overs.

Marco Jansen keeps thing tight and gives just two runs in his second over. KKR: 20/1 (4 overs)

Nitish Rana joins Ajinkya Rahane in the middle as Bhuvneshwar Kumar conceds just one run in his second over. KKR: 18/1 (3 overs)

Marco Jansen starts off with a dot, before he passes the strike to Rahane. 

The bowler welcomes Rahane with a length ball, which the batter whacks for a six over the long leg boundary. He then passes the strike back to Iyer. 

Meanwhile, Jansen strikes in his final ball as he cleans up Iyer on 7. What a start for the young pacer! KKR: 17/1 (2 overs)

Venkatesh Iyer gets off the mark straightaway with a single. 

Ajinkya Rahane, on the other hand, starts cautiously, plays two dots before passing the strike back to Iyer, which include an extra in between the dots. 

Iyer takes charge and slashes a slightly pitched up ball straight past the bowler for a FOUR.

Bhuvneshwar then misses his length and bowls another wide, before Iyer gets another single after the ball takes an inside edge and goes straight to Umran Malik at fine leg. 

Nine runs come off the over.

Kolkata Knight Riders have won the toss and opted to bat.

“The nature of the pitch has changed over the last one-and-a-half months. There is a bit of live grass. The greenness of the grass and firmness tells there will be something for the seamers. For batting, it will come onto the bat. It looks like the batsmen will have the last laugh.”

The match-up between Shreyas Iyer and Bhuvneshwar Kumar is dominated by the pacer. Iyer has so far managed 44 runs in the 49 balls he has faced by the SRH bowler, which include 3 dismissals. His average is just 14.67 and the strike-rate is 89.79. 

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s senior-most bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has so far maintained a good economy but has not been among the wickets. He has so far managed 10 scalps from 11 matches and will to better his performance going into a virtual do-or-die contest.

Shreyas Iyer has been Kolkata Knight Riders from the front and is the only batter from his side to amass over 300 runs in the season. The middle-order batter has accumulated 336 runs from 12 matches. 

Nitish Rana has showed good composure and the team will hope for another good outing from him. He is the second-highest run-getter from the KKR camp and has 293 runs from the same number of matches.

If we look at the recent record at the venue, nine out of the twelve times, team batting first have won the contest. 

Meanwhile, KKR also enjoy a good record, winning seven of the eight matches they’ve played at the venue.  

SRH, on the other hand, have just emerged victorious on one occasion in the five matches they’ve played here.

The last time KKR locked horns with SRH, middle-order batters Aiden Markram and Rahul Tripathi dictated the show. Tripathi scored 71 and Markram played an unbeaten knock of 68 as SRH had then completed a stiff 176-run chase in just 17.5 overs and won the match by 7 wickets.

If we look into the head-to-head numbers, KKR lead the chart with 14 wins. SRH have managed to defeat them on 8 occasions. 

Both the sides head into the contest with contrasting results. KKR are coming into the clash after beating bottom-placed Mumbai Indians emphatically by 52 runs. 

Sunrisers Hyderabad, on the other hand, endured a 67-run drubbing against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Kolkata Knight Riders are dealing with their own problems. Seasoned campaigner Pat Cummins, who proved to be a vital cog in KKR’s emphatic win over Mumbai Indians, has been ruled out of the remainder of the IPL with a mild hip injury. He has already left for Australia for rehabilitation.

Umesh Yadav, who is having a good outing and is currently the leading wicket-taker from the Kolkata camp, missed the previous tie after pulling his calf muscle. It will be interesting to see if he returns to the playing XI or not.

If we look at SRH’s batting, it has been equally disappointing at the top. Kane Williamson has failed to get big runs, managing just one half-century so far. His partner Abhishek Sharma, too, has failed to convert his starts into big totals. 

Meanwhile, if we look at the middle-order Rahul Tripathi will look to buck himself against his former franchise. 

Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram have been among runs but the batters will hope for some respite from their bowlers and look to restrict their opposition to a reasonable total if they bat first.

Umran Malik, who has risen to the occasion on the back of his breathtaking pace and some inspirational performance, which include a five-wicket haul against Gujarat Titans, has failed to replicate the same. In fact, in the last few encounters, Malik has looked off colour and has leaked too many runs without striking once.

Meanwhile, Fazalhaq Farooqi and Karthik Tyagi, the other two pacers have been expensive, adding to SRH’s problems.

Sunrisers Hyderabad have been marred with injuries, which have cost them their premier spinning all-rounder Washington Sundar and death-over specialist T Natarajan.

Sundar had injured his bowling hand while playing against Chennai Super Kings, Natarajan had picked up a niggle. 

However, team coach Tom Moody was optimistic about the duo’s return in the very important clash against KKR.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad unit kicked off the season with consecutive defeats. They then quickly turned the tables and marched to winning ways, securing five wins in a row. However, a series of losses have once put them back to where they had started the race from. With 10 points from 11 encounters, SRH can hope to make it to the next round only if they can win their remaining matches.
