It has been a brisk start for Gujarat Titans as they rake up 54/0 in six overs. Saha took care of the run-scoring in the first five overs before Shubman Gill turned up the heat against Ashwin in the final over of the Powerplay.

A six and a four off Murugan Ashwin in the final over of the Powerplay and a 50-run partnership between the two in 5.3 overs!

It did look from the naked eye that the ball had gone past the inside edge towards the fine leg boundary, but Bumrah seemed to think that it has deflected off the pads.

Worse, Rohit takes the review and the umpire didn’t bother checking the ultra edge for that.

It hasn’t really been a brisk start, but Saha has dished out a couple of confident strokes in the initial few overs. He’s batting on 25 off 19 balls.

Wriddhiman Saha has made a strong start. He finds another boundary as he cuts the fullish delivery wide of off-side brilliantly towards third man.

It has been a strong comeback from the Gujarat Titans after they conceded 63 in the Powerplay. The onus is now on youngster Tilak Varma and the experience Kieron Pollard to rebuild for MI.

Perhaps the most consistent batter for MI this season, Suryakumar Yadav is at no.3.

Rohit Sharma goes for a reverse sweep but misses the line of the ball. Rashid signals to Hardik Pandya for a review and the GT skipper wastes no time to opt for the same.

This match will not have much of an impact on the playoff race, as Titans are favourites to qualify while MI will be eliminated with another loss.

“DB (Brevis) is my best friend in the team and we keep pranking each other, enjoying each other’s company, I have made a lot of friends and we enjoy our time together. We give our 100 percent on the field and have a good time off it.”

Delhi Capitals took an aggressive approach in the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the same venue yesterday, putting a mammoth score of 207/3 in 20 overs.

“I have a very good feeling. My only aim is to make the team win and so the right things are happening. Last match we won and are in a good space. We took the last game deep, the batters took responsibility and we have the same plan, taking it deep is better as this a high scoring ground and wickets in hand is the key.”

“It’s a nice feeling to be playing again, it’s not ideal when you can’t get on the park but you have to work hard in training and be ready for an opportunity when it comes. It’s nice to have a win, it feels like a long time since our last game, but we’ve prepared well and we’re going to come and try and take down a top team tonight.”

“It can be demoralising to score consistently in a losing team,” says Pietersen on Suryakumar.

The MI batter has scored the second-most number of runs at no.3 since IPL 2019 (after Sanju Samson)

Rohit Sharma says that the reason to leave out Hrithik Shokeen and bringing in Murugan Ashwin was ‘tactical’.

“It has been a tough road for us, we want to finish on a high by playing our best cricket. Not to take too much pressure, we just want to enjoy ourselves which we haven’t done in the first half of the season. Last game was good, hopefully we can create that momentum.”

“With the new ball, something might happen, wanted to make sure we get most out of it. More than the formula, it’s important to get the best things for our team and see how next games come. We have been quite consistent, one game was bound to happen (about loss against PBKS). It was supposed to come. Batters didn’t do their best, even the bowlers could have been better.”

Gujarat Titans win toss, opt to bowl against Mumbai Indians

Kevin Pietersen says that it’s a “beautiful wicket” to bat on.

“I don’t talk about dimensions anymore. These guys are not scared. There were 23 sixes last night,” says Pietersen in his pitch report.

“They’ve got a victory in their last game, tonight’s an opportunity for him to score some big runs,” Smith says about Rohit Sharma in the pre-match show.

“It is a bit different wherever you go, some pitches bounce a bit more, some are slow and some have a bit more pace in them. It is all about adjusting to different conditions. Preparation hasn’t been any different, keeping the same work and keeping simple.”

Hardik Pandya is only 1 catch away from completing 100 catches across T20s.

Mahela Jayawardene was tight-lipped about the possibility of Tendulkar Jr. making his debut tonight; however, with MI all but out of contention for the race for playoffs, will the team management be inclined towards playing the youngster?

Tristan Stubbs, who was named the replacement of the injured Tymal Mills for the remainder of the season, has joined the MI squad in Mumbai. However, he is unlikely to be available for the game tonight.

Tim David showed MI what they were missing in the lower-middle order in the last game, when he remained unbeaten on 20 off 9 balls and ensured Mumbai’s first win.

Were MI a bit too late in putting faith in David?

Last night, David Warner squared off against his former franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad for the first time since he was released by the side last year. The Aussie batter remained unbeaten on 92, as Delhi Capitals sealed a comfortable win in the game.

Can Pandya replicate Warner’s heroics against MI tonight?

“You’ve seen them winning three-four games at least, from positions where they’ve been outplayed by individual brilliance, finishing games off by Miller or Tewatia or Rashid. That’s what the season requires. We haven’t had that spark that we’re used to having.”

GT are at the top of the points table with 16 points in 10 matches. With a win tonight, Hardik Pandya’s men will extend the lead over second-placed LSG to four points.

MI, meanwhile, are at the bottom with two points, and will remain 10th even with a win.

GT would likely be bringing back Yash Dayal in the XI for the game against MI, after Pradeep Sangwan proved to be expensive in the last game (0/23 in 2 overs)

Sai Sudharsan was the only positive for the side when it took on the Punjab Kings in its last game. Sudharsan held one end as he remained unbeaten on 65, taking the side to a respectable score of 145/8 while batting at no.3.

Sudharsan has scored 131 runs in four innings for GT so far.

“Kieron Pollard has been honest as well, expressing himself that he hasn’t been able to finish games. But at the same time, when you review properly, those were situations where it’s tough for one person to do the bulk of the work. It’s a team game.”He needs a little bit of support as well, which he lacked in some of the other games. We would love to see Polly in his usual rhythm and go and execute.”

Kieron Pollard’s underwhelming performances in the lower-middle order has been a major deterrant for MI in their quest for wins in this season. Pollard has scored only 125 runs in nine innings so far at a dismal strike rate of 120.

While Bumrah’s dry run in IPL 2022 has been a cause of concern, his lack of wickets in the second innings has made it worse for MI. Bumrah has bowled with an economy rate of 9 in four innings while defending a total, without a wicket.

Ever since he replaced Matthew Wade in the opening role, Wriddhiman Saha has impressed with his performances in IPL 2022. Saha has scored with a strike rate of nearly 130 in the season so far, scoring 154 runs in five innings.

“We have chased well in this tournament, if required (later on in the tournament), we had to know how to set targets. This is part of a learning curve, but this is all about learning to come out of our own comfort zone. We were always talking about getting better even when we were winning, we would talk about things that didn’t go our way (today) and would look to come back better in the coming games.”

Rashid played a match-winning 40-run knock off just 21 deliveries, and boasts of an incredible strike rate of 191.89 in six innings for the Gujarat Titans.

Rashid Khan may not have taken many wickets in IPL 2022 so far (9 wickets in 10 innings), but the batters have found it tough scoring big against him. With an economy rate of 6.92, Rashid has been the most economical bowler for the Gujarat Titans so far.

Gujarat Titans’ Mohammed Shami has 15 wickets to his name in IPL 2022 so far, and is four wickets away from equalling Yuzvendra Chahal in the list of highest wicket-takers in the season.

Ishan Kishan is among a select few batters who have a successful record against Rashid Khan. In 51 deliveries against the leg-spinner, Ishan has scored 64 runs without being dismissed even once.

Will Ishan Kishan keep his record intact tonight?

The two teams have never squared off against each other in IPL 2022 so far. On paper, Gujarat Titans look massive favourites to win this game, but MI’s victory in the last game has certainly given them a much-needed momentum.

“Ro (Rohit Sharma) has been brilliant in batting for long periods, getting those big scores consistently and the rest of the guys have batted around him. He knows he had starts and he is disappointed that he has been unable to convert them into big ones.

“For a team to work it is not about just one individual, it is about a team executing a game plan. The way we have structured our lineup this season, that is something we have lacked and at the top.”

Jasprit Bumrah’s lack of wickets has been one of the biggest causes of concern for MI. The leading Mumbai Indians pacer has taken only five wickets in nine matches; although, it can be said that he hasn’t received much help from his fellow bowling partners.

Rahul Tewatia has scored 190 runs in nine innings (unbeaten in 4), and played a couple of match-winning knocks for the side in the lower-middle order. With a strike rate of 137.94, Tewatia has been one of the most important batters for GT this season.

Rohit Sharma is only one six away from completing 200 sixes for Mumbai Indians across IPL and CLT20.

Any target of less than 180 has been chased successfully by sides at the Brabourne Stadium in IPL 2022. (5 out of 5 times)

Tilak Varma has the most runs against spinners in the ongoing edition of the tournament (155 runs in seven innings).

More significantly, he is even ahead of the likes of KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson, who are 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the list respectively.

Tilak Varma has been one of the rare positives for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022. He has scored 307 runs in nine matches for MI, and has the second-best batting average for an Indian on his debut IPL season since 2009 (43.85).

Ruturaj Gaikwad of CSK tops the list with an average of 51 (IPL 2020).

Rohit Sharma has had one of his worst seasons in IPL so far. The MI captain has scored only 155 runs in nine innings in this edition so far and would be desperate to get his form back in the remaining five games of the season.

For the record, Rohit’s worst-ever season in IPL came in 2018, when he scored 286 runs in 14 innings (unbeaten in two innings)

Shubman Gill had scored two successive fifties in his first three matches in IPL 2022, but has failed to score more than 31 in any of his last eight innings since. In addition, Gill has also been dismissed in single-digit scores on five occasions in IPL 2022.

As the tournament enters its business end, GT would be aiming for an improved showing from the India youngster.

Like GT, MI have also played two games at the Brabourne Stadium, but lost both of them. The side met DC in its opening game of the season, losing by four wickets. In their last match at CCI, LSG defeated MI by 16 runs.

Gujarat Titans have played 2 matches at the Brabourne Stadium so far in IPL 2022, having won both of them. While they defeated PBKS by six wickets in their first game at the venue, the side registered another six-wicket win in their last game at the CCI against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Kuldeep Yadav and David Warner produced brilliant performances against their respective former franchises for the Delhi Capitals. While Hardik Pandya had nothing but respect for MI after the side released ahead of the 2022 edition, the GT captain would undoubtedly be aiming to make a difference in the game tonight.

With 309 runs in nine innings, Hardik Pandya could re-enter the top-5 in the list of Orange Cap with a big knock tonight. Wouldn’t it be poetic if Hardik does it against Mumbai!

David Miller, who was bought for merely INR 3 crore on Day 2 of the IPL mega auction, has been one of the most consistent performers in the middle and lower-middle order for GT. With a strike rate of 145.68 and an average of 57.40, Miller has scored 287 runs for the side in 10 innings.

One of the major reasons behind Titans’ continued success in this season so far has been the presence of multiple match-winners in the side. David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Hardik Pandya, Shubman Gill, and Rashid Khan have all produced impressive outings in IPL 2022 so far.

While the MI had a disastrous season in IPL 2022, this year unearthed a number of talents for the Mumbai Indians. While Tilak Varma has produced consistent performances for the side throughout the season, Hritik Shokeen has also been impressive in his limited appearances for the side so far.

24-year-old Indian pacer Kartikeya Singh made his MI debut in the side’s previous game against RR, and registered impressive figures of 1/19 in four overs, as he took the important wicket of Sanju Samson and helped MI restrict RR at 158/6.

Mills had appeared in five matches for the MI, taking six wickets. The MI pace attack is left further depleted with the absence of Mills, but the side saw an emergence of an Indian youngster in their previous game..

On Thursday, MI had announced that Tymal Mills was ruled out of the rest of the season with an ankle injury. South Africa’s wicketkeeper-batter Tristan Stubbs replaced the English bowler.

While Pandya went on to enjoy huge success in his maiden IPL stint as captain (8 wins in 10 games), Mumbai Indians are reeling at the bottom of the table with only 2 points in nine games. 

MI had retained captain Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah, Kieron Pollard, and Suryakumar Yadav ahead of the auction.

This is the first time that Hardik Pandya will take on the Mumbai Indians in IPL. Pandya had made his league debut for MI in 2015, and went on to represent the side in seven seasons before being released by the franchise after the 2021 edition of the tournament.

Mumbai Indians registered their first win of the season against Rajasthan Royals in their last game, and would look to capitalize on the momentum when they take on the Titans. While MI are all but knocked out of the season, they will certainly look to cause some chaos in the race for top-4 in their remaining games.
