India vs England Highlights, 4th Test, Day 5: India beat England by 157 runs at The Oval to take a 2-1 series lead

This presentation ceremony culminates the Test. India made 191 in their first innings before bowling England out for 290. Trailing by 99, Indian batsmen, led by Rohit Sharma’s 127, posted 466 and set England a target of 368. Eventually, England were bowled out for 210 as India sealed a 157-run win.

For his brilliant century in the second innings, Rohit Sharma is awarded the ‘Man of the Match’

“I wanted to be on the field as much as I could. That hundred was special. We know how important was the second innings. Virat just mentioned the effort from the batsmen, and as a unit it was really important. It’s my first overseas hundred. Really glad that I could get the team in an important position. There was pressure after that 100-run trail. Once we got the lead, we just wanted to put pressure on the bowlers. I try to contribute for the team, it’s important for me. I know the importance of opening the innings. I am glad I could make it count. It’s always important to embrace the challenge, it’s not going to be easy. The real game-changer was after the World Championship final. Looks good at the moment, the message from the physio is that we got to asses every minute.”

Shardul Thakur is not the ‘Man of the Match’ award. Thoughts?

“Well, I think the best thing about both the games has been the character the team has showed. We are not looking to survive in this game, we are here to win. Really proud of the character the team has showed. It’s quite relative what you call flat. The conditions were hot and we knew were in with an opportunity when Jadeja was bowling in the rough. The bowlers were good with the reverse swing today. We believed we could get all 10 wickets, we had the belief. As soon as the ball started revering, Bumrah said give me the ball. He bowled that spell and swung the game in our favour with those two huge wickets. I think you pointed his performance. Rohit’s innings was fantastic. What Shardul has done in this game stands out. His two fifties deflated the opposition. I think he batted well in both the innings. We never go towards analysis, statistics and numbers. We know what we need to focus on and we take a collective decision as a group. It’s unfortunate they are not here. Everyone is happy with the win. It gives us more motivation to win the next Test. We have the belief, we are just looking forward to the opportunities. The fans have been amazing as well.”

“Frustrating not to get something from the game today, we felt we had an opportunity to win, but credit to India, they got the ball to reverse and that was the turning point. Could have made more of a first-innings lead, and you have to make chances count against world-class players. Got to find ways to get better but be realistic and realize that was world-class bowling. It might reverse at OT, we’ll have to manage it better. Whenever you lose the game you can look at the toss, but we’ve got to be more ruthless and make that a 200-run lead. Got to be clinical, not be comfy, make big partnerships. We have played good cricket and important to remember that.”

Just like Lord’s, the final day of this Test belonged to the Indian bowlers. This pitch, by the time Day 5 turned up, had absolutely nothing to offer to the pacers. The roughs surfaced and yes Jadeja picked up two wickets, but the pacers’ hard work played a massive role. Be it Bumrah’s fiery spell that brought the stadium and the crowd to life, or Shardul Thakur’s brief yet magical spells or Umesh’s carnage towards the end, this was a complete bowling effort.

From 127/7 on the first day to winning the Test, this is proper Test cricket win. What a seriously good side this is.

This was the session they were looking for and they are just two wickets away from the win.

Yadav back into the attack from the Pavilion end. Still no new ball

OUT! AND THEY DON’T EVEN NEED IT! India’s field placements does the trick as Woakes chips the ball directly to KL Rahul at short mid-wicket. For Woakes’s whips, they had a short mid-wicket and a short leg in place.. And the players will take tea.

OUT! REVIEW! NOT OUT! Overton survives. Bumrah, again coming in wide form over the wickets, angles the ball in sharply. The ball thumps into Overton’s pads and the umpire had initally given it out. Overton reviewed it and while there was no inside the edge, the ball-tracking showed that the ball was drifting down the leg side and wide of the leg stump.

Kohli has thrown the ball to Bumrah to try and clean up the tail now that Root is gone. India need just three wicket-taking balls to take a 2-1 lead in the series.

FOUR! Root leans into the cover drive and creams the ball past Rahane. He gives it a chase but to no avail as the ball runs off the practice pitches and into the boundary cushions.

Umesh strays onto Woakes’ pads. The all-rounder flicks the ball and threads it between the catcher and mid-on for four. 

While Siraj has been on money so far, Umesh hasn’t quite shown the same accuracy.

FOUR! Joe Root still has the shots in him. Well, of course, his team may be in trouble but his class is permanent. Overpitched from Siraj, Root present the full face of the bat and times the ball past mid-on for four. LOVELY.

Umesh Yadav is back into the attack

Siraj pulled out of a delivery as a fly entered his mouth during the run-up. So, he can use this drinks break to wash the fly away. Not my words. Nasser Hussain said so.

Safe to say, that was the game-changing hour

WOW! The last 20 minutes were something, huh? Jasprit Bumrah has been replaced, he’s been given a break. Siraj comes back on.

WHAT AN ATMOSPHERE AT THE OVAL CURRENTLY! The Indian supporters are rallying behind every single delivery now. Bumrah to Root is a battle to watch out for and fair to say, Bumrah ruled the roost in that over. His slowest delivery in this over was 87MPH. And the fastest, you may ask? 90. 

The 5th ball of the over was a scorching yorker that Root, somehow, managed to survive.

From around the wicket, Jadeja pitches the ball on the roughs and the ball turns a mile towards the off side of Hameed. The batter lunges forward, looking to get bat on ball, but the ball beats the outside edge and rams into the off stump.

FOUR! Good start from Root. A juicy full-toss from Jadeja first up and Root reverse sweeps the ball behind point for four.

An engaging and action-packed 1st session comes to an end! England finish at 131-2 after 59 overs, and they still need 237 runs to win. 

Hameed is holding firm so far as he sees out another session. Unbeaten on 62 and Root is unbeaten on 8. 

Looking to capitalize on the menial amount of reverse swing, Kohli has thrown the ball to Umesh Yadav. 

THREE! Root drives the ball beautifully through the cover region and Rahane does well to clean it up and keep the runs down to three.

Malan runs out of luck as he is run-out on 5. He never looked comfortable and after two close shaves, he has to walk back.

Coming to the dismissal, Hameed plays the ball to covers and calls for a quick single. The ball had gone straight to the fielder, substitute Mayank Agarwal, who throws the ball to Pant and he does the rest. Malan was well short and as they say, THERE WAS NEVER A RUN THERE

NOT-OUT AND INDIA REVIEW…IN THE NICK OF TIME! Jadeja gets one to turn back in sharply. Malan looked to pad it away but was struck in a dangerous position. India’s appeal was turned down and upon review, the ball tracker showed “umpire’s call” as the ball was clipping the top of off.

Well, that was one very, very eventful delivery. Jadeja to Malan and the batter skips down the track to bunt the ball to mid-on. He takes off for a quick single but he has to scamper back as Jadeja, who was looking to collect the ball, collides with Hameed at the non-striker’s end. Both players go down and Siraj then nails a direct hit. But Malan had reached back home on time. 

During the changeover, Kohli and Malan could be seen sharing a word or two and ending the discussion with a smile.

DROPPED! IS THIS GOING TO BE PROVE COSTLY FOR INDIA! Out of nowhere, Hameed looks to clear mid-on with a lofted drive. He fails to time the shot off Jadeja and Siraj, stationed at mid-on, fails to hang on to the ball. A costly drop and he seems to have injured himself in the process. The physio is out.

DRINKS! A short break for the players as the first hour ends!

ENG are 105/1. Eng need 263 runs, India need 9 wickets. Easy! But not for those who are on the field.

The roughs surfacing on the deck are becoming more and more prominent. India must be salivating at the sight of those patches but Jadeja needs to make things happen.

Immediately after the wicket falls, Kohli brings on Jadeja. He begins with a full-toss and Hameed flicks it off his pads, runs 3 and brings up his 4th Test fifty.

OUT! It’s all happening in this over and it’s that man. Shardul Thakur! 

Coming to the wicket ball, it was anabsolute peach from Thakur. From around the wicket, he got the ball to jag back out just the right amount. Burns looks to defend but the ball catches the nick on its way to Pant. India is pumped and so is Kohli.

Dawid Malan is the new man in. He plays out the remaining two deliveries of the over. 

ENG are 100/1 after 41 overs, needing 268 to win.

Shardul Thakur has been brought on by Kohli as India are desperate for a wicket. 

FOUR! Third boundary of the day for Burns and once again, the batter did not have to work hard for it. Thakur, from around the wicket, strays onto his pads and Burns obliges; flicks the ball to the fine leg boundary.

TWO! 50 FOR RORY BURNS AND THE 100-RUN STAND BETWEEN THE TWO! What a time to play this knock. 

FOUR! Too straight from Umesh and Burns obliges with the flick off his pads behind square for four.

The first half an hour yields 15 runs, including 2 boundaries, and 0 wickets. England batter continue to make merry.

Michael Holding, who is currently in the commentary box for host broadcaster Sky Sports, commented “watch the game, not Twitter” when the cameraperson showed a group of four people in the stands checking out their phones. 

Definitely made me chuckle. 

Umesh To Burns: Kohli brings in an extra slip but Burns does well enough to get off strike on the very ball by picking off a single. 

For Hameed, back to two slips. 

SHOUT FOR A CAUGHT BEHIND! NOT OUT! NO REVIEW. The ball raced past Hameed’s bat when he looked to flick the ball off his hips. Indians were excited but the umpire wasn’t.

ENG are 85/0 after 37 overs.

Both bowlers, especially Bumrah, have been on the money so far. The on-air experts have revealed that there is a hint of reverse swing, citing Bumrah’s previous over. The shiny side was facing the legside and yet, the ball nipped back in. Could be…interesting. 

But for now, ENG seem just fine as Bumrah bowls a maiden.

Burns will get his first look of the morning at last. He clips the ball off his hips to deep square-leg and he is also off the mark in the morning.

FOUR! Edged and four. First boundary of the morning comes off Burns’s bat. The key to the ball staying low and bouncing before reaching the slip cordon was Burns defending the ball with soft hands.

As expected, Bumrah will operate from the other end.

YORKER! Straightaway, Bumrah goes full and straight with the yorker. Haseeb does well to dig it out. The plan is clear and India have set the field for it. They are going to attack Hameed’s stumps and pads and hope to get him bowled or LBW.

How excited are you? I, for one, cannot wait for the action to begin! This will be ariveting day of cricket. The equation is simple:

90 overs. 10 wickets.291 runs

“We’re into the last day and the game is equally poised. Both teams are pushing hard for a result, you can’t expect a lot more. All we need is an early wicket, or even if we get a couple of wickets in the middle, the pressure will be on them. We’ll need to keep pushing them back. There can be a bit of reverse swing with the older ball, there’s enough footholes and Jadeja will be obviously bowling into the rough. I think there could be a bit of reverse swing on offer later today.”

‘It’s a beautiful morning here in London. The batsmen should really enjoy batting on this surface, it’s still a good batting pitch. There are some footholes for Ravi Jadeja to exploit, especially against the left-handers. India will have to bowl really well to force a win today,’ reports Dominic Cork

India will heavily bank on Jadeja’s exploits. The left-arm spinner conceded a few yesterday due lack of accuracy and consistency. Whenever he got the ball to pitch on the roughs, he caused some discomfort to the batsmen. Today, India would want him to do more of it.  Should he nail consistency and target the roughs more often, he can tilt the momentum into his side’s favour very quickly

The first session will be of utmost importance today. The plan for both teams is very clear:

1. For India– if they can pick up 3-4 wickets without giving away too many, they will have a shot at wrapping up the game before 90 over. 
2. For England– The openers continue need to continue the good work from yesterday. If they can survive this session, the hosts will be the favourites to win the Test.

Following Ravindra Jadeja (17), Ajinkya Rahane (0), and Virat Kohli (44) falling in quick succession, India were in a spot of bother. However, Shardul Thakur (60) came to India’s rescue once again in the lower-middle order and along with Rishabh Pant (50), he stitched an important 100-run stand for the 7th wicket to get India’s innings back on track. After their departure, Umesh Yadav (25) and Bumrah (24) added quick runs to take India to 466.

In response, Burns and Hameed played out 32 overs to end the day at 77/0.
